Curious question about George "L" Pick-ups

Post by Johnny Baker »

I apologize, in advance, if I'm in the wrong section with this question. Does anyone know if there is a way to do coil splits on a George "L" pickup? Thanks for any assistance or replies.
I am currently running a Simmons SD10, Peavey Nashville 400 that's packing a 15" BW, Peavey Delta Fex effects processor, and a Match Box. Best rig I've ever run and the sound is truly incredible.

I have several, and they're all 2-conductor + shield, so can't be split, that requires at least 3 conductors. They're also potted with epoxy so there's no opening them up. George L did make a 10-5 and a 12-5 for a while that was made to split, there are some threads about those here on the forum. Here's a 12-5 with the instruction sheet: viewtopic.php?t=393208

Steeltronics is making their own version of George L's now, they might be able to advise if they can make you one that can be split.

Thanks so much. I appreciate the info. Reason I was asking, I've been noticing that mine is beginning to sound kinda muddy of late. It sounds just fine playing solo but when I get to jamming, with a group or in church, then the problems can start. I guess, I will do some more experimenting with an equalizer to see if I can tune that muddiness out. Thanks again.

Just a thought you could try lowering the pickup to see if that cleans the sound a little.

The 10-5 is the BEST pickup GeorgeL ever made.. So versatile.. 5 very different sounds and textures, without having to touch the amp controls... I would grab this one fast.. Its a terrific buy at$65! I used these for years and they transformed the MSA and Carter guitars I had them in!
I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

no gear list for me.. you don't have the time......

I had the same sensation when mine was new. I learned to EQ it, and also learned how important mids are in an amp and speaker setup. Also, dont fool your ear by comparing with a telecaster or strat. Unless its truly damaged, it should be fine with a good amp and EQ setup. As a result, you get a distinguishable voice that blends without stepping on the guitars. On the otherhand, if you really want that single coil sizzle, you'll need to swap out with a good single coil.
